Often hailed as India's most prolific translator of Hindu epics and sacred texts, he later adopted the name Manmatha Nath Shastri after obtaining his degree. Dutt's achievements included a translation of Mahanirvan Tantra and a comprehensive book on the life, teachings, and order of Buddha. In the preface of the latter, he stated that it was based on all available works in Sanskrit and Pali.
